The Winnetka home that became famous from the classic movie Home Alone made a big splash when it hit the market a little more than a month ago. The home is located at 671 Lincoln in Winnetka and was originally listed at $2.4 MM by Marissa Hopkins of Coldwell Banker. The house practically had it’s own PR department, with special phone lines set up for press inquiries, and it was featured on national TV and newspapers. Here is the description:

Stately 14 room Georgian, dramatically situated on beautiful half-acre lot. Located blocks from the village center and Lake Michigan, this gracious 4 bed, 3 full and 2 half-baths home was featured in the family movie “Home Alone” The next proud owner will enjoy a very special dwelling where legendary memories were made and new ones will flourish in this grand, yet comfortable residence.

Built in 1921, the home is indicated to have 4243 square feet and, as the photo gallery below shows, it really is an elegant home. It has 2 fireplaces, a 3 car garage, and the kitchen is perfect for making those giant pancakes. Oh, wait…that’s a different Macaulay Culkin movie. The home also supposedly has numerous nooks and crannies for hiding. One caveat: the dining room chandelier is not being sold with the home.

The home is owned by John and Cynthia Abendshein, who had lived there about 18 months when they were approached by Christopher Columbus (no, not that one) who was directing the film movie.

The price was just reduced yesterday to $2.175 MM after only 34 days on the market. Could it be that potential buyers are turned off by the home’s history of being invaded by bungling burglars?

If you think you can just call up Marissa and get a tour of the home think again. All buyers must be pre-qualified. You have to produce either a pre-approval letter from a lender or show proof of funds.
